Australia’s Capral Aluminium has announced its contribution to the world’s largest battery-electric ship, the China Zorrilla, which recently launched from Incat Tasmania’s Hobart shipyard.
The ship, a major milestone in sustainable marine transport, is built by Tasmanian manufacturer Incat.
The 130m vessel, previously known as Hull 096, is capable of transporting approximately 2100 passengers and 225 vehicles. Once operational, it will service the route between Montevideo, Uruguay, and Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Capral, Australia’s largest aluminium supplier, supported the project by providing materials used in the vessel’s lightweight structure, which is essential for energy efficiency in battery-powered marine transport.
According to Capral, the vessel is a key demonstration of local manufacturing capabilities contributing to global innovation in clean energy solutions.
In a statement marking the launch, Capral described the project as a proud example of its “Crafted with Capral” initiative, which supports Australian manufacturers using locally sourced aluminium in advanced applications.
