WATCH: Akaysha commences massive Brendale battery project

Akaysha Energy has ceremoniously broke ground on its $200 million Brendale Battery Energy Storage System.

The 205 megawatts/410 megawatt-hour project, one of the largest systems in Queensland, will add significant storage capacity to the National Electricity Market when it commences operation in 2026.

Located next to a key electricity substation, the Brendale BESS is expected to reduce costs and enhance grid stability in line with the state’s renewable energy targets.

Featuring Tesla Megapack technology, the system can store enough energy to power 300,000 homes during an outage.

Paul Curnow, Managing Director of Akaysha Energy said the Brendale BESS is a crucial step in the company’s mission to rapidly deploy large-scale battery storage, enhancing grid stability and driving the shift to sustainable energy.

“It’s one of four such projects we have underway in Queensland as the state gets serious about the energy transition,” he said.

“Once operational, the Brendale BESS will significantly bolster the delivery of a stable supply of energy to the local community.”

The project will provide energy arbitrage and ancillary services to support the grid and integrate solar and wind power. Construction by Consolidated Power Projects is anticipated to create over 80 local jobs.
