Origin Energy has expanded its renewable energy portfolio by acquiring Walcha Energy, a developer with projects totalling a combined capacity exceeding 1300 megawatts (MW).
The purchase follows on from Origin’s acquisition of the Warrane property in July 2023, enhancing its presence in the New England Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) in New South Wales.
Origin head of energy supply and operations Greg Jarvis highlighted the strategic importance of the acquisition.
“Through Walcha and the earlier acquisition of the Warrane property, Origin’s portfolio now includes several projects with promising wind and solar resources within the New England REZ, close to recently published transmission line investigation routes,” Jarvis said.
“We look forward to building on the work already completed on these renewables projects, bringing Origin’s scale, expertise and track record in developing and operating large scale energy and resource projects across Australia.”

The Walcha acquisition aligns with Origin’s commitment to leading the energy transition and accelerating renewables and storage in its portfolio.
Walcha brings with it the proposed Salisbury solar farm located south of Uralla, along with the Ruby Hills wind farm situated west of Walcha, both within the New England REZ.
