Victoria’s electric vehicle (EV) market has reached a record sales, with total uptake surpassing 100,000 vehicles statewide.
According to the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, electric vehicles accounted for 15.4 per cent of new light vehicle sales in March 2026, marking the highest monthly share on record. The result builds on steady growth earlier in the year, following sales shares of 9.2 per cent in January and 13.7 per cent in February.
Year-on-year, EV uptake has increased significantly in Victoria. Compared to March 2025, sales have risen by 86 per cent, with approximately 35,000 additional EVs on state’s roads over the past 12 months.
The growth reflects both increasing consumer demand and improving economics for EV ownership. With current fuel prices, EV drivers in Victoria are estimated to save around $2300 annually on fuel and maintenance costs.
Transport remains a key focus area in the state’s decarbonisation efforts, accounting for around 25 per cent of Victoria’s total greenhouse gas emissions. The expanding EV fleet is therefore seen as a critical lever in reducing emissions and progressing towards the state’s target of 50 per cent of all new light vehicle sales being zero-emissions vehicles by 2030.
To support this transition, the Victorian Government has released a new EV Charging Regulatory Statement to accelerate the rollout of charging infrastructure. The framework outlines measures to streamline deployment, address barriers and support private sector investment in EV charging networks.
The latest policy builds on the state’s Zero Emissions Vehicle Roadmap, which set the 50 per cent target and identified priority actions to drive adoption. This includes the Acceleration of Zero Emissions Vehicle Adoption Program, designed to expand charging access across metropolitan and regional areas.
Under the Destination Charging Across Victoria program, 133 public EV chargers have been installed to date, supporting longer-distance travel and reducing range anxiety for drivers.
Victoria has also emerged as a national leader in EV adoption. Data from the Electric Vehicle Council shows the state recorded the highest share of EVs in new vehicle sales among Australian jurisdictions in its latest State of EVs report.
