Trinasolar has lodged plans for a new mega battery energy storage system to be built in Dederang, Victoria.
According to the company, the 500 megawatts (MW) Kiewa Valley BESS project represents a significant leap forward in sustainable energy solutions, promising to enhance grid stability and resilience while facilitating the transition towards a cleaner, more efficient power ecosystem.
Trinasolar’s Australia Team is currently in the assessment phase for developing and operating the large-scale BESS approximately 3km northeast of Dederang.
The system aims to provide critical grid support during periods of peak demand and emergencies.“We are very excited about the ongoing progress and support for this project,” Jose Flores, Trinasolar ISBU’s Australia Team’s Head of Development said.
“The project is well-advanced in discussions with AEMO and AusNet regarding connecting to the grid.”
A community information session was held in May, with the project team maintaining ongoing engagement with local residents.
“We are committed to ensuring that this project not only meets the highest standards of design and sustainability but also aligns with the needs and values of the local community,” Olivia He, Trinasolar ISBU’s Senior Project Development Officer said.
Detailed site studies and designs have now been finalised, allowing Trinasolar to submit a planning application to the Department of Transport and Planning.
As part of its community benefits proposal, Trinasolar has put forward establishing a Community Benefit Fund in coordination with Alpine Shire Council.
This fund would provide an annual endowment to support local priorities and needs.
The planning application will soon enter a public consultation period, allowing residents and stakeholders to review the proposal and provide feedback.
Community input will be a vital component of the review process overseen by the Department of Transport and Planning, with a decision expected by early 2025.
