Tasmanian Government announces interest-free loans for solar and batteries

Last week, the Tasmanian Government announced its Energy Saver Loan Scheme to encourage residents of the Apple Isle to invest in energy efficiency solutions.

Under the scheme, private residential customers, small businesses and landlords of residential rental properties can apply for interest-free loans between $500 and $10,000 over one to three years to install rooftop solar systems, batteries and other energy saving products.

The loans will also have no establishment fee and no account-keeping fees.

Brighte Capital will be the scheme’s finance partner and program provider, while energy efficient products will need to be purchased and installed through a network of accredited vendors, which is being expanded to support the scheme.

Eligible products under the Energy Saver Loan Scheme will include rooftop solar panels, battery storage, heat pumps, energy efficient appliances, double glazing and insulation.

“Our research shows upfront cost is one of the biggest barriers households face to making [renewable energy] change, and this program will inspire action,” says Brighte Capital founder and CEO Katherine McConnell.

“Tomorrow’s homes will be powered by the sun, and accelerating the transition is a progressive and positive step.

“We’re looking forward to working with the Tasmanian Government to achieve their ambition to put downward pressure on bills, make energy efficiency affordable and create local jobs.

“Across Australia, people are looking for ways to bring down their bills, and their power bill is the one they have the most control over.

“Installing energy efficient products powered by solar can make a real difference to household budgets in a short time.”
