Across Australia, households are emerging as a powerful driver of the nation’s clean energy transition, with electrification and smart energy technologies increasingly shaping how energy is generated, managed and consumed.
New insights from the Telsyte Australian Smart Home Market Study 2024-2028 reveal a decisive behavioural shift underway. Around two in five Australian households currently using gas (41 per cent) say they intend to fully electrify their homes, while more than 40 per cent of Australians are actively exploring intelligent home energy systems.
The findings suggest electrification is no longer solely driven by policy or large-scale infrastructure investment. Instead, households themselves are accelerating the transition, adopting technologies that offer greater control, efficiency and resilience amid rising energy costs.
“Electrification has moved from aspiration to action,” said Chris Kerr, Vice President and Chief Executive Officer at Clipsal by Schneider Electric.
“Australians are choosing connected, efficient technologies that not only reduce bills, but also make their homes smarter, safer and more resilient. This is becoming the foundation of next-generation Australian living.”
Smart homes reshape energy use
Australia’s smart home market is projected to exceed $5 billion by 2028, growing at an average annual rate of 13 per cent. While early adoption focused on convenience and automation, energy management is now emerging as a primary driver of uptake.
With electricity prices rising by an average of 17 per cent in 2024, households are increasingly turning to technology to manage costs. The study found that 64 per cent of Australians are actively seeking ways to reduce energy bills through smart energy solutions, while 43 per cent expressed interest in Home Energy Management Systems capable of monitoring and optimising energy use across lighting, climate control and appliances.
“Intelligence is now part of Australia’s energy story,” Kerr said.
“When homes can sense, predict and optimise their own energy use, we move beyond basic automation into an era of sustainable, self-managing design. That shift is critical for resilience, cost control and emissions reduction.”
As rooftop solar, home batteries and connected switchboards become more common, households are increasingly able to align energy consumption with generation, reducing reliance on the grid during peak periods and cutting overall demand.
EVs accelerate electrification momentum
Electric vehicles (EVs) are also playing a central role in accelerating household electrification. According to the Telsyte study, Australian EV ownership is expected to exceed two million households by 2028, with the majority preferring to charge vehicles at home.
Interest in solar-linked charging and off-peak energy optimisation is growing, as households seek to integrate EV charging into broader home energy systems. More than half of EV owners surveyed also expressed interest in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, which allows vehicles to store and export energy back to the home or electricity network.
“EVs are turning the garage into a key part of the home energy ecosystem,” Kerr said.
“Homes are evolving into dynamic energy hubs that integrate charging, storage and automation, giving households greater control, resilience and long-term savings.”
The electrified home of the future
With 60 per cent of Australians reporting higher power bills in 2024, demand for energy autonomy is reshaping household investment decisions. The Telsyte research points to a future where electrification, automation and renewable generation converge at the residential level.
From rooftop solar and connected batteries to smart meters, switchboards and EV chargers, Australian homes are becoming an increasingly important frontier of the clean energy transition.
