Record output achieved at VIC big batteries

Energy generation has hit a fresh milestone in Victoria, with the state’s big batteries reaching a combined rate of 1049 megawatts (MW) last week, becoming the first state in Australia to hit more than one gigawatt.

Energy generation has hit a fresh milestone in Victoria, with the state’s big batteries reaching a combined rate of 1049 megawatts (MW) last week, becoming the first state in Australia to hit more than one gigawatt.

Among the big batteries contributing to the record were the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub, Latrobe Valley, Rangebank, Koorangie, Victoria Big Battery and Hazelwood. These are just some of the nine big batteries currently in operation across the region.

This volume equates to the average power use of 2.3 million homes, having surpassed the previous record charging rate of 789 MW, which was set in early September 2025.

At the peak, batteries were soaking up roughly half of the state’s rooftop solar output, which was injecting more than 2.1 GW (gigawatts) into the grid and accounted for more than 14 per cent of state demand.

Victoria’s next big batteries under construction and recently approved include the 600 MW/1.6 GWh (gigawatt hour) Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub (under construction), the 1 GW/2.5 GWh Portland Energy Park (approved), the 300 MW/2.4 GWh Nowingi battery (approved), and the 400 MWh Rangebank battery (under construction).

These projects are part of the state’s effort to reach 95 per cent renewable energy by 2035.
