The Queensland Government has opened applications for its Supercharged Solar for Renters program, a new initiative designed to reduce electricity costs for tenants while supporting greater uptake of rooftop solar across the state’s rental market.
Administered by Queensland Treasury, the program officially opened on 12 December 2025 and provides rebates of up to $3,500 to eligible landlords who install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on their rental properties. Importantly, landlords must apply for and receive conditional approval before installation in order to claim the rebate.
The scheme is targeted at rental properties with existing tenancy agreements, ensuring that savings flow immediately to tenants rather than being deferred until a future lease. Around 6,500 renting households are expected to benefit, with average electricity bill savings estimated at around $700 per year, depending on location and system size.
As part of Queensland’s broader commitment to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy, the program is positioned as a cost-of-living measure that also delivers longer-term energy system benefits through increased distributed solar generation.
Landlords are also expected to gain from the initiative. Installing rooftop solar can improve rental affordability, increase property appeal in a competitive market, and potentially lift property value. This aims to provide an incentive for participation without altering existing rental conditions.
Eligibility criteria
To qualify, landlords must:
- Live in Australia
- Own a rental property they do not occupy themselves
- Have tenant consent (and body corporate consent where applicable)
Eligible properties must:
- Be located in Queensland
- Be a Class 1a building (house, duplex or townhouse) or a secondary dwelling such as a granny flat
- Be currently rented under an eligible lease
- Rent for $1,000 or less per week
- Be individually metered
Properties are ineligible if they already have a solar system installed or are part of an embedded network. Each property can receive one rebate, with landlords able to apply for up to three properties.
System and installer requirements
Eligible systems must be at least 3 kilowatt in capacity and include a generation signalling device. Equipment must be listed on the Clean Energy Council’s approved modules and inverters lists, supplied by a New Energy Tech Approved Seller, and designed and installed by appropriately accredited and licensed professionals under Solar Accreditation Australia and Queensland electrical licensing requirements.
Only systems installed after program opening and conditional approval are eligible.
Queensland Treasury has also issued a warning to landlords and installers to ensure information is sourced directly from legitimate qld.gov.au websites, noting the emergence of third-party sites claiming to represent the program.
