Peak energy industry bodies have urged Energy Ministers to ensure the energy sector is fully consulted as part of the reported review into the governance arrangements of the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).
In a joint statement, the Australian Energy Council, Clean Energy Council and Energy Networks Australia, said any review of AEMO’s governance must be open, transparent and involve genuine engagement with industry stakeholders.
The organisations said they support initiatives that improve market outcomes and enhance the efficiency and functionality of AEMO, including efforts to minimise duplication across market processes. However, they cautioned that changes to governance structures must be carefully considered, particularly as the energy transition accelerates.
“As the transition progresses, AEMO’s role has never been more important,” the joint statement said.
“This review must carefully consider the implications of governance settings on AEMO’s ability to maintain its independence and ensure the ongoing security and reliability of the power system.”
“Our members stand ready to engage fully in a genuine review that can ensure AEMO remains fit for purpose.”
The peak bodies emphasised that industry participants should be treated as central stakeholders throughout the review process, noting their dual role as both members of AEMO and funders of its operations. They argued that meaningful industry input is essential to ensure governance arrangements remain fit for purpose in an increasingly complex energy system.
The proposed review is expected to have implications for both the National Electricity Market and Western Australia’s energy market. The organisations shared that transparency will be critical to delivering outcomes that support consumers, investors and the broader energy sector.
