Orana BESS hits halfway

Akaysha Energy has reached the halfway mark in deliveries for its Orana BESS near Wellington, NSW, with the arrival of the 224th Tesla Megapack.

The project will install 448 Megapacks in total, providing 415MW of capacity and four hours, or 1660MWh, of storage. Once complete, Orana BESS will be among the largest storage facilities in New South Wales.

Construction is already underway at the 2km² site, which sits north-east of Wellington in the Central West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). The REZ is forecast to host 3,000MW of new wind and solar generation, making large-scale storage a critical element for system stability.

The Orana site has been selected for its proximity to a robust section of the TransGrid 330kV transmission system. It shares a boundary with an existing TransGrid substation, limiting the need for additional high-voltage infrastructure and reducing visual impacts.

Delivery and installation are being managed by Tesla Energy and Consolidated Power Projects, with Akaysha Energy noting that progress to date has been “smooth and safe.”

Once complete, the Orana BESS will play a central role in integrating renewable capacity from the Central West Orana REZ into the state’s electricity network.
