NSW Health (New South Wales Health) has upgraded electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across two major hospital sites, supporting the New South Wales Government’s transition to a fully electric passenger fleet by 2030.
Delivered by Aeron Group, a Schneider Electric Master eMobility EcoXpert, in partnership with Schneider Electric, the project aligns with the state’s Net Zero Government Operations Policy. The policy requires all new government passenger vehicles to be electric by 30 June 2030, with an interim target of 50 per cent fleet adoption by 2026.
For NSW Health, electrification represents both a compliance requirement and a broader emissions reduction strategy. Transport remains a significant contributor to the organisation’s carbon footprint, including fleet operations as well as travel by staff, patients and visitors.
Clean energy goes live in hospitals
The rollout was completed within operational hospital environments, requiring careful staging to avoid disruption to critical healthcare services.
Aeron Group upgraded existing infrastructure and installed 36 Schneider Electric Pro AC chargers and two Pro DC chargers across the sites, supporting a growing EV fleet used by staff.
However, integrating additional charging capacity presented challenges. Ageing electrical and digital infrastructure risked triggering costly grid upgrades to meet increased demand.
To address this, the project deployed Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure EV Charging Expert system, which incorporates Dynamic Load Management. The system balances power demand across chargers in real time, preventing overload and reducing peak demand without requiring major network upgrades.
Ben Espinoza, Managing Director at Aeron Group, shared that maintaining operational continuity was a key priority.
“These facilities operate around the clock, so our focus was on delivering reliable EV charging without disrupting staff or patient services,” Espinoza said.
“By leveraging Dynamic Load Management, we were able to work within existing infrastructure while ensuring the system remains safe, stable and scalable.”
Scaling infrastructure for electrification
Tim Pratt, Vice President Power Products at Schneider Electric, shared that the project reflects a broader shift across essential services as electrification accelerates.
“NSW Health’s transition to electric vehicles is not only a policy requirement but also a health initiative,” Pratt said.
“Reducing transport emissions contributes directly to improved air quality and healthier communities, particularly in high-density urban environments.”
Pratt added that combining smart charging hardware with intelligent energy management systems enables organisations to scale EV infrastructure efficiently while maintaining reliability.
As government agencies progress toward the 2026 interim target, projects such as this highlight the importance of flexible, software-driven solutions that can adapt to existing infrastructure constraints.
With EV uptake continuing to rise across public sector fleets, scalable charging systems are expected to play a critical role in supporting Australia’s broader decarbonisation efforts.
