New solar and battery project for Qld

BESS, batteries, battery, energy storage

Iberdrola Australia has commenced construction on the Broadsound Solar Farm and Battery project, marking the company’s entry into the Queensland market.

The significant renewable energy development, located at Clarke Creek about two hours northwest of Rockhampton, will comprise a 376 megawatt (MW) solar farm and a 180MW/2-hour Battery Energy Storage Project.

Upon completion in mid-2026, the Broadsound project will generate enough electricity to power 145,000 homes. During its approximately two-year construction schedule, the project is expected to create up to 350 jobs.

“After providing energy to Queenslanders for many years, we’re excited to be able to generate energy locally here with the Broadsound Solar Farm and BESS project,” Ian Quirke, CEO of Iberdrola Australia said.

Ross Roffee AO, Executive Chairman of Iberdrola Australia, highlighted the company’s experience in the Australian market.

“With more than 20 years’ experience working in Australian communities, we’re looking forward to this big step into the Queensland market and adding to our 17 GW of energy assets in operation across the country.”

Roffee expressed gratitude towards the local community, First Nations people, and the Queensland Government and Isaac Regional Council for their collaboration in delivering the project, which aims to provide clean and affordable energy.

The Broadsound project is being developed on the land of the Barada Kabalbara Yettimala People, and Iberdrola Australia has established a Community Benefit Fund tailored to the local community’s needs during construction and operation.

In addition to generating renewable energy, the project includes sustainability initiatives such as the regeneration of local creeks and improving important fauna movement corridors in the region.
