In a sector driven by the relentless pace of technological change, HyperStrong is charting a new course — one built not on chasing the latest battery specs, but on understanding and meeting the long-term needs of energy storage customers across the globe by delivering tailored solutions.
The result is Magic Block, a flexible and highly modular utility-scale energy storage platform that redefines how battery systems are designed, deployed, and managed to enhance efficiency and adaptability for diverse energy needs.
According to Matthew Yang, Senior Product Manager for Overseas Utility Energy Storage at HyperStrong, MagicBlock is the product platform of global collaboration and deep listening.
“Through engaging with partners and clients via detailed surveys across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, North America, and Asia-Pacific, we discovered valuable insights that drove the development of MagicBlock, ensuring it meets the specific needs of our customers” Yang said.
“The feedback was consistent: customers wanted better return on investment, improved safety, higher efficiency, lower CAPEX, and scalable deployment.”
HyperStrong took these priorities and re-engineered its product platform from the ground up.
Instead of locking customers into one specific battery cell or power conversion system {PCS}, MagicBlock provides a flexible base that can be configured to meet different project requirements — whether it’s a renewable integration in Australia, a frequency regulation system in Europe, or a standalone grid application in Africa.
Rethinking the containerized BESS
One of the most visible innovations is the shift from the industry-standard 20-foot container to a compact 10-foot form factor as a standard unit, which enhances transportability and simplifies deployment in regions with limited logistics capabilities.
While this may seem counterintuitive in a space where bigger often means better, Yang explained the logic: “In regions with limited transport infrastructure—overweight 20-foot containers create huge logistical challenges. You often need special permits just to move them, and delays are common.”
Rather than force customers into complex disassembly and reassembly procedures, HyperStrong opted for a container that’s easier to move and faster to deploy.
But this is not simply a 20-footer cut in half. The MagicBlock platform features a user-friendly design including front-facing airflow, a top-mounted thermal management system and a front-only maintenance interface. The result: greater modularity, simplified operations, and the ability to install units side-by-side or back-to-back, even in tight spaces.
Built for flexibility, designed for ROI
MagicBlock is more than a container — it’s a grid-ready platform that adapts to the customer’s application, not the other way around. It can be supplied as a DC-only solution for EPCs who want to integrate their own PCS, or as a turnkey AC-integrated unit complete with transformers inhouse or outsourced.
HyperStrong also redesigned the thermal management system and high-voltage architecture to reduce auxiliary power loads — an important factor for project developers looking to optimise CAPEX and long-term operating expenses.
“For customers targeting four, eight, or even twelve-hour storage durations, these design efficiencies can make a big difference,” Yang said.
Underpinning it all is a new 400kW PCS and real-time performance monitoring system that proactively tracks key metrics like discharge capacity, round-trip efficiency, and battery state of health (SoH).
“Customers don’t want to just ‘set and forget’—they want assurance that their system is performing,” Yang said.
“We built intelligent balancing and thermal algorithms to keep those indicators within contract-defined thresholds.”
A new standard in O&M
Operations and maintenance (O&M) is often where energy storage projects stumble. HyperStrong tackles this head-on with a digital-first approach.
Every MagicBlock unit can be connected to both a web dashboard and a mobile app, allowing customers to monitor performance remotely, receive real-time alerts, and schedule maintenance based on predictive analytics, enhancing operational efficiency through data-driven insights.
“Our intelligent inspection system ranks multiple sites based on urgency and lifecycle conditions,” Yang said. “If you have 10 or 20 storage sites across Australia, the system will tell you exactly where to send your team and what tools to bring.”
To further lower the barrier for overseas markets, where skilled technicians may be scarce, HyperStrong has built a voice-activated AI assistant named HyperGenie, powered by the company’s proprietary big data model.
It provides verbal, step-by-step guidance for tasks like part replacement or troubleshooting, complemented by multilingual on-screen prompts.
“We want even a beginner to perform complex maintenance tasks confidently and safely,” Yang said.
Engineering for the future
Beyond software, HyperStrong has developed hardware tools for fast battery module replacement.
Each module can weigh over a ton and sit deep within a tightly packed container.
Traditional replacement methods using forklifts or manual tools were too time-consuming and dangerous.
HyperStrong’s semi-automated system allows a full module swap in under an hour with minimal labor.
This focus on usability and lifecycle management extends across the entire platform.
From intuitive maintenance layouts to early fault detection and automated fault diagnostics, MagicBlock simplifies the entire operational chain—from installation to years-long service.
A platform, not just a product
MagicBlock represents a fundamental shift in how energy storage systems are conceived. It’s not a product built around battery cells — it’s a platform designed around people, places, and performance.
By building in transportability, modularity, and intelligent monitoring from the start, HyperStrong has created a system ready to meet the real-world demands of global energy storage.
“Our customers are planning for the next decade, not just the next deployment,” Yang said.
“With MagicBlock, we’re giving them the flexibility, visibility, and reliability they need to scale confidently.”
In a field too often dominated by one-size-fits-all solutions, HyperStrong’s MagicBlock is proof that thoughtful design and customer-driven engineering can unlock a smarter, more efficient future for energy storage.
