Hybrid power deal energises copper project

Aggreko has finalised a long-term power purchase agreement with Harmony Gold for the Eva Copper Mine Project in northwest Queensland, advancing plans for what is expected to be Australia’s largest off-grid renewable hybrid power facility.

Under the agreement, which has a minimum term of 15 years, Aggreko will build, own and operate the energy solution to support both construction and ongoing operations at the site. The Scotland-headquartered provider specialises in temporary power generation and energy services and is expanding its footprint in Australia’s resources sector through integrated, lower-emission systems.

The hybrid facility will combine a 118 megawatt-peak solar farm, a 250 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system, and a 104 megavolt-ampere thermal power station designed with scalability in mind.

Together, these assets are intended to deliver a stable and flexible power supply, optimising renewable generation while maintaining reliability for continuous mining operations.

Once operational, the system is expected to provide a consistent and scalable energy solution for the Eva Copper Mine, balancing variable renewable output with firming capacity from storage and thermal generation.

Aggreko shared that the level of integration across technologies reflects growing demand for more sophisticated off-grid energy systems in remote industrial applications.

George Whyte,  Managing Director nat Aggreko AusPac, said the project represents a significant step forward for hybrid power in Australia’s mining sector.

“The scale of this renewable hybrid power station and the level of integration between solar, battery storage and thermal generation set a new benchmark for off-grid energy,” he said.

“Our long-term agreement reflects Aggreko’s commitment to partnering with industry to deliver innovative, lower-emission energy solutions that are both commercially and operationally robust.”

The company also indicated the system has been designed with future flexibility in mind, including the potential integration of wind generation and eventual connection to transmission infrastructure. This approach is intended to ensure the power solution can evolve alongside the mine’s long-term operational requirements.

The Eva Copper Project, located near Cloncurry on the traditional lands of the Kalkadoon People, was acquired by Harmony Gold in December 2022. A final investment decision to proceed with construction was made in November 2025 following completion of a feasibility study.

Positioned as a large-scale copper development in northwest Queensland, the project is expected to begin production in the second half of 2028. Harmony has identified renewable energy integration as a key component in improving the project’s overall performance and reducing emissions intensity.
