In July 2025, the Australian Federal Government introduced the Cheaper Home Batteries program, a rebate for home battery systems. Although the rebate is being reduced from the original 30 per cent from 1 May 2026, and will continue to decrease every six months, it has raised awareness amongst homeowners about the value of having a battery system installed.
It might be too late to capitalise on the installation rush, but it is not too late to expand your business by adding batteries to your service offering.
With prices increasing across most cost-of-living expenses, adding a battery to a job is an easy way to grow your business without having to find even more customers. Becoming more of a one-stop-shop for all things solar also helps you stand out against your competition.
If you are already an electrician and have your Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accreditation for solar installation, adding batteries is easy.
In addition, all battery installers are required to get insurance, their electrical license, and DNSP notification.
How to become qualified to install batteries
The SAA offers a Grid Connect Battery Storage (GCBS) battery system installer accreditation, which is separate from the solar photovoltaic accreditation.
This requires:
- Completion of battery system-specific installation
- Understanding of direct current safety, system design, and integration
- Knowledge of different battery technologies (lithium, lead-acid, etc.)
- Compliance with AS/NZS 4509.1 and 4509.2 standards.

- UEERE0077 – Install battery storage equipment power conversion equipment to grid
- UEERE0078 – Install battery storage to power conversion equipment.
How to market yourself as a battery installer
Once you are accredited, it is time to start booking jobs. Adding a new service to an existing business means you will need to update your website, social media, and any listing like Google Maps or three quotes services.
Pylon has a guide on marketing your business here.
With Pylon’s CRM, it is easy to reach back out to your previous customers to update them on your new battery offering and retrofit the job. You will also be able to target new customers who have panels but no battery, and upgrade them with an off-grid offering. Depending on your location, you can even consider expanding into regional or rural markets.
Luckily, you can design solar systems with batteries using Pylon. Pylon has an extensive library of components, auto-generated single-line diagrams, proposals and e-signatures, and payment gateway makes it easy to upsell batteries onto any solar job. To get started now, sign up for free here.
