Australia’s home battery rollout is full steam ahead, but installation completion timelines are stretching as solar installer workforce constraints tighten.

Data from Sunwiz shows a record 1.2 gigawatt-hours of residential batteries were registered under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program in February, as households moved to secure systems ahead of impending changes to federal incentives from May 2026.

Despite strong demand, installers report that supply chains remain stable. Instead, the key constraint is the availability of accredited installers required to deliver systems under the rebate.

Across multiple states, installers shared with SolarQuotes that lead times were extended to between eight and ten weeks, with many businesses now booked through to mid or late May.

Graeme Galletly, General Manager at Goliath Solar and Electrical, shared the reason behind logged jobs being delayed is because solar installers are overbooked, not approvals or product availability.

“We have 8-10 weeks lead time, and are currently booking installations into May. Installation capacity is the main constraint,” he said.

A similar trend is being reported in Queensland. Caleb Davey from Expert Electrical said his team is fully booked through to late May, noting that recruiting qualified electricians remains difficult.

Installers consistently report that battery availability is not a limiting factor, with major brands such as Tesla, BYD and Fronius readily accessible through distribution channels.

Recent developments, including expanded distribution agreements for Tesla Powerwall systems, are expected to support ongoing supply as demand grows.

The primary constraint sits within workforce capability. To qualify for rebate-supported installations, electricians must hold grid-connected battery accreditation through Solar Accreditation Australia.

While many electricians are accredited for rooftop solar, fewer hold battery-specific certification. This creates a structural bottleneck as battery installations require specialised design, installation and commissioning processes that can take several hours per system.

In addition, installers must balance new installations with servicing and warranty obligations, further limiting output.

Expanding the installer base remains a longer-term challenge. Accreditation requires completion of nationally recognised training through registered training organisations and formal approval processes, limiting how quickly new workers can enter the market.

With further potential policy adjustments under consideration, installers are approaching the market cautiously, prioritising delivery capacity over projected demand.

For households, the implication is that installation timelines are unlikely to ease in the near-term, according to SolarQuotes.
