Carnegie Clean Energy, a technology company, is integrating Tasmanian aquaculture with cutting-edge technology to explore the possibility of harnessing ocean energy for the production of sustainable food, particularly green salmon.
The innovative approach involves floating salmon farms designed by Carnegie Clean Energy, which leverage the power of ocean swells to generate onboard electricity, thereby reducing the carbon footprint associated with salmon farming.
In collaboration with prominent salmon and ocean trout producers, Huon and Tassal, Carnegie Clean Energy is developing a technology known as MoorPower.
This initiative aims to eliminate the reliance on diesel generators commonly used on large offshore feed barges, marking a significant stride towards more environmentally friendly and sustainable aquaculture practices.
A pilot project has been deployed and tested on a barge off North Fremantle.
Blue Economy Cooperative Research Centre is working with CCE on this new idea.
According to Blue Economy’s CEO, Dr. John Whittington, the deployment of Carnegie’s MoorPower is a success.
“This technology advances Australia’s ocean energy capabilities and provides real-world solutions for decarbonization and a tangible pathway to net-zero,” Whittington said.
Carnegie CEO Jonathan Fiévez said the deployment of MoorPower technology is a significant milestone in the challenge of decarbonising offshore operations.
“It is an important step in bringing our technology to the world. We have listened to the needs of industry operating in isolated offshore environments and adapted our unique CETO technology to their requirements.”
Fiévez said MoorPower will reduce the requirement for fossil fuels, reduce carbon emissions, reduce risk, and drive down costs.
“What we are learning from this demonstration deployment at our testing grounds off Fremantle will be critical to rolling this technology out to aquaculture and other marine industries. We are grateful for the support of the Blue Economy CRC and the collaboration with all our project partners which have contributed to the success of the MoorPower Scaled Demonstrator,” he said.
