The Australian Government has announced a $100 million investment to support the Hunter Region’s Port of Newcastle Clean Energy Precinct, which has now entered a crucial phase of development.
In a significant step towards transforming the Hunter Region into a clean energy hub, key agreements for design work and environmental impact studies have been signed, marking a major milestone for the project.
The precinct aims to repurpose a 220-hectare industrial site for clean energy production, storage, and distribution, both domestically and internationally.
Chris Bowen, Minister for Climate Change and Energy highlighted the importance of the precinct.
“The Hunter has been industrial and economic powerhouse for decades, making the Port of Newcastle an ideal location for a clean energy precinct that can support decarbonisation of heavy industry and connect Australia’s renewable resources to the world,” he said.
“The Albanese Labor Government is supporting industrial regions like the Hunter to take advantage of the economic and job opportunities that come with more affordable and reliable renewable energy.”
Catherine King, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government said this Clean Energy Precinct demonstrated how legacy infrastructure can be repurposed towards making Australia a renewable energy superpower.
“Through our investment, we are supporting Australia’s transition to net zero while creating jobs and economic opportunities in the Hunter region,” she said.
“The project will help position Australia as a global leader in technologies and products that reduce carbon emissions including hydrogen and green ammonia.”
The Port of Newcastle, Hunter Region’s critical deep-water global gateway, is partnering with the NSW Government to deliver the project.
Community consultation and industry engagement will be central to the next steps, which include Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) studies.
This development is expected to position the Hunter region as a key player in Australia’s emerging hydrogen economy, supporting the nation’s clean energy goals.
