Free courses equip plumbers for renewables

The Victorian Government is offering free courses for plumbers and fourth-year apprentices to design and install energy-efficient heat pump hot water systems.

The Upskilling for Plumbers program aims to equip 800 licensed and registered tradespeople with the necessary skills to meet growing demand for sustainable home heating solutions.

Victoria’s Energy and Resources Minister Lily D’Ambrosio encouraged more plumbers to take advantage of the fully funded training opportunities available in September and October.

“As demand for energy-efficient hot water system continues to grow, it is imperative that we continue to up-skill our workforce to support the growth in the renewable and clean energy sector,” she said.

The half-day courses, delivered by the Plumbing Industry Centre for Climate Action, will be held in Narre Warren, Brunswick, Geelong, and later in Bendigo and Gippsland.

Over 110 plumbers and apprentices have already completed the training since July 2024, reflecting increasing household interest in heat pump hot water systems.

These systems can save households up to $250 per year compared to gas hot water, in addition to further savings from going all-electric.

Water heating accounts for around 23 percent of total energy use in Australian homes, making it a major source of emissions.

By training plumbers to install efficient heat pump systems, the program supports the government’s climate goals of reducing emissions, phasing out natural gas connections, and promoting home electrification.

The energy transition is expected to create 59,000 jobs in Victoria as the state aims for 95 per cent renewable electricity by 2035.

The training will also ensure plumbers can advise customers on available rebates and incentives, such as those offered through the Solar Homes and Victorian Energy Upgrades programs for energy-saving hot water installations.
