The Federal Government has announced an extension of its energy bill relief program, providing an additional $150 in rebates to every Australian household and small business.
This measure will be rolled out from July 2025 and will continue until the end of 2025, offering vital cost of living relief.
“From 1 July 2025, every household and around one million small businesses will see another $150 in rebates automatically applied to their electricity bills in quarterly instalments,” the Government said in a press release.
This extension will be on top of the rebates already in place, with Treasury estimating that it will directly reduce inflation by approximately half a percentage point in 2025.
The initiative is expected to lower household bills by 7.5 per cent on average nationwide compared to what they would be without the extension.
The Federal Government pointed to the success of previous rebates, citing data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics which showed that energy rebates contributed to a 25.2 per cent drop in electricity prices in 2024.
Without the rebates, the fall in prices would have been a mere 1.6 per cent, the Government said.
The extension of this relief will cost $1.8 billion, according to the Government’s forward estimates. In addition to the rebates, the Government will extend the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Inquiry into the National Electricity Market for another 12 months to ensure energy retailers are offering fair deals to consumers.
“This is about ensuring that Australians have access to affordable energy,” the Government said.
“We are committed to making it easier for consumers to switch energy plans, remove unnecessary fees, and secure the best value for their money. These reforms could save consumers hundreds of dollars per year.”
