ARENA strengthens executive team

Kane Thornton, clean energy, ARENA board

The Federal Government has revealed several significant appointments to the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) board, strengthening its leadership in the country’s renewable energy sector.

Justin Punch has been re-appointed as chair for his third term, while Elizabeth O’Leary will continue her role for a second term.

Two new members have also been appointed to the board. Ruby Heard, an electrical engineer and founding director of Alinga Energy Consulting, joins as  first Indigenous board member of ARENA board.

The Federal Government said her appointment brings valuable experience in off-grid systems and renewable energy projects for rural First Nation communities.

Dr Dean Travers, an energy sector strategist with a global background in conventional and renewable energy project development, also begins his first term on the board.

Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen welcomed the appointments.

“ARENA’s work is instrumental to advancing emerging renewable energy technologies and innovation in Australia’s renewable energy sector,” Bowen said.

“Justin and Elizabeth’s re-appointments to the board ensures certainty as ARENA continues to play a critical role in Australia’s energy transition and delivering a Future Made in Australia.

“I also welcome Ruby and Dean for their first terms on the board and trust their experience will prove highly valuable to ARENA’s important work.”

According to the government, ARENA has played a crucial role in Australia’s renewable energy landscape since its establishment in 2012, providing more than $2.6 billion in grant funding and catalysing nearly $12.5 billion in investment.

The agency is now taking on a key role in the government’s Future Made in Australia agenda, overseeing initiatives such as Hydrogen Headstart, Solar Sunshot, Battery Breakthrough, and the Future Made in Australia Innovation Fund.
