Compliance concerns emerge in home battery rollout

A surge in household battery uptake is being matched by growing scrutiny over installation quality, with new findings from the Clean Energy Regulator highlighting risks to safety, performance and consumer confidence.

Under the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program, more than 250,000 small-scale battery systems have been installed, representing around 7.7 gigawatt-hours of storage capacity. The scheme, which provides a discount of about 30 per cent on installed systems, is designed to reduce peak demand, improve grid reliability and accelerate decarbonisation.

However, compliance inspections conducted between July 2025 and April 2026 point to systemic issues in installation practices. According to a Clean Energy Regulator report (published in April), of the 1278 systems inspected, 60.8 per cent were deemed substandard, while 1.2 per cent were classified as unsafe. While the sample represents just 0.5 per cent of total installations, the findings raise concerns about the consistency of workmanship across a rapidly expanding market.

Importantly, the issues identified relate not to battery technology itself, but to how systems are installed. The majority of non-compliance cases were linked to incorrect or missing labelling, including improperly marked circuits and absent safety signage. While typically lower risk, these issues can still affect system usability and compliance with standards.

More serious risks were associated with electrical work, particularly exposed or poorly secured wiring. Inadequate cable protection and loose connections were identified in a subset of installations, posing potential fire and electric shock hazards. Industry observers note that installation complexity varies significantly between systems, with less integrated designs requiring greater on-site electrical work and higher levels of installer expertise.

The findings come amid strong demand for battery systems, driven in part by policy incentives and rising energy costs. Industry feedback suggests workforce constraints are contributing to quality challenges, with a shortage of qualified electricians placing pressure on installation timelines and standards.

In response, the regulator has increased inspection activity and signalled stronger enforcement. This includes the potential for accreditation to be revoked in cases of repeated non-compliance, alongside a push for improved training where knowledge gaps are identified.

For consumers, due diligence remains critical. Engaging accredited installers, reviewing past installation work and ensuring systems are delivered to a high standard are increasingly important steps as battery adoption scales.
