Chris Bowen, Federal Climate Change and Energy Minister is set to travel to China for the 8th Ministerial on Climate Action (MOCA) on July 22-23.
The event brings together climate ministers and senior officials from approximately 40 countries to advance global climate negotiations and address key issues.
Minister Bowen will deliver a keynote speech focusing on emissions reduction and the transition to a low-carbon economy. He is scheduled to meet with his ministerial counterparts to align global efforts towards achieving net-zero emissions and building resilience against climate change.
“China is both Australia’s biggest trading partner and the world’s biggest emitter. On this visit I will continue the Government’s approach to China, which is to cooperate where we can, disagree where we must, and engage in the national interest,” Minister Bowen said.
“Collaboration is crucial to address the challenges of climate change and deliver real outcomes, particularly for the Pacific family.
A key focus of the MOCA meeting will be exploring how countries’ future emissions reduction commitments can provide clear signals to markets for investment and encourage collective climate action.
Minister Bowen plans to discuss Australia’s potential role in supporting the global net-zero transformation, with the aim of creating new jobs and industries for Australian workers and communities.
During Minister Bowen’s absence, Minister Husic will serve as the acting Minister for Climate Change and Energy.
