Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen has announced Australia has reached a historic milestone with the four millionth rooftop solar installation completed.
The Federal Government said the average household with rooftop solar now saves over $1500 annually on power bills, and collectively, Australian households are saving up to $6 billion per year in energy costs, according to the Clean Energy Council.
The widespread adoption of solar has contributed to stabilising electricity prices across the country by reducing reliance on more costly energy sources.
Bowen said Aussie homeowners are at the heart of the renewable energy transformation and are proving there are economic benefits to be made.
“When it comes to powering our homes, Australians know nothing will beat our sun,” he said.
“We are lucky to call the sunniest continent on earth home, which means we’ve got access to the cheapest and cleanest renewable energy resource at our fingertips.
“Aussie homeowners know rooftop solar is a no-brainer when it comes to bringing down bills, which is why we have been installing about 300,000 rooftop systems a year and there is no sign of that slowing down.
“The four millionth solar installation is an incredible milestone for Australia and another sign of how the Albanese Government’s Reliable Renewables Plan to bring on more of the cheapest and cleanest form of energy is working for Australian households.”
Kane Thornton, Chief Executive of the Clean Energy Council, celebrated the role of more than 10000 professional solar installers, most of whom are small business operators, in driving this revolution.
“Installers are the engine room of this solar revolution and with most being sole traders or small business operators, this is good news for jobs, for economic prosperity and for communities and families, everywhere,” Thornton said.
“This extraordinary achievement demonstrates that clean energy is now mainstream.”
Australia’s cumulative rooftop solar capacity has now surpassed 25 gigawatts, exceeding the total capacity of coal-fired power in the country.
With these installations reducing carbon emissions and supporting grid stability, the next challenge lies in advancing household battery storage and smart appliances, further enhancing energy security and reducing overall costs for consumers.
