Australia gives green light to vehicle-to-grid technology

Australia has approved new standards that will enable vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging technology, allowing electric vehicles to feed power back into homes and the electricity grid.

The announcement was made by Energy Minister Chris Bowen at the Sydney International EV Show on November 9.

Under the new framework, manufacturers can now register their V2G-capable vehicles and charging products with the Clean Energy Council after meeting Standards Australia requirements.

The technology is expected to be operational before Christmas 2024.

“No longer will charging be a one-way street,” Bowen said.

“That you can charge when you want to charge and you can discharge back to your house or to the grid when that suits you.”

The move is part of Australia’s Consumer Energy Roadmap, which aims to give consumers more control over their energy resources.

The bidirectional charging capability will allow EV owners to optimise their energy usage based on electricity prices and potentially earn revenue by selling power back to the grid.
