Australia and Singapore unite to drive regional energy transition

The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) and Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Singapore International Energy Week 2025, marking a new phase of cooperation between the two nations in advancing regional energy transition goals.

The agreement establishes a formal framework for the exchange of regulatory knowledge and best practices across gas and electricity markets, while strengthening collaboration on low-carbon technologies and energy security across the Asia-Pacific region.

Under the MoU, both agencies will engage in joint activities including training initiatives, staff exchanges and regulatory dialogues designed to deepen understanding of evolving market dynamics and decarbonisation strategies.

Puah Kok Keong, Chief Executive at EMA emphasised that energy regulators play a pivotal role in navigating the complexities of the energy transition.

“EMA is delighted to deepen our cooperation with the AER on regulatory best practices and low-carbon energy technologies. This builds on the excellent momentum of our bilateral energy cooperation and the 60th year of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Australia,” Kok Keong said.

Justin Oliver, Deputy Chair at AER said the partnership underscores Australia’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with its regional counterparts.

“Through sharing expertise and experiences, we can strengthen efforts to support energy security and the energy transition across the region,” Oliver said.

The partnership complements ongoing multilateral efforts across Southeast Asia to align regulatory frameworks with emerging low-emission technologies, enhance market transparency and accelerate collective progress towards net-zero.
