Aus-UK green hydrogen innovation funding initiative unveiled

A collaborative effort between Australia and the United Kingdom is underway with the opening of a joint funding call for green hydrogen projects.

The Australia-UK Renewable Hydrogen Innovation Partnerships Program, initiated by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, aims to support research, development, and demonstration of renewable hydrogen technologies for industry and transport decarbonisation.

Both nations, committed to a net-zero transition, anticipate that this joint call will bolster industrial decarbonisation targets and potentially create future trade opportunities.

With $10 million in funding available for Australian projects over two years, the program encourages collaboration by leveraging co-contributions from Australian and UK proponents, along with UK government funding matched by Innovate UK.

Projects, encompassing the production of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives, as well as its application in hard-to-abate industries and heavy transport sectors, may receive grants of up to $2 million in a single round.

Applicants are required to submit joint projects with UK partners, who can apply for matched funding from Innovate UK.

This initiative aligns with the Australian Government’s investment in international collaboration on clean energy and technology, addressing obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement.
