Amazon has expanded its renewable energy footprint in Australia, signing nine new power purchase agreements across New South Wales and Victoria that add 430 MW (megawatts) of capacity to the National Electricity Market.
Amazon’s total contracted renewable energy capacity in Australia is now 990 MW across 20 projects, making the company as one of the largest corporate backers of clean energy in the country, according to BloombergNEF.
Amazon’s renewable energy project investment portfolio reflects a shift towards integrated energy solutions, combining generation with storage. wind project, three utility-scale solar and BESS (battery energy storage system) and hybrids, four distributed solar-BESS systems, and a standalone battery installation at the Mokoan Solar Farm in Victoria. Eight of the nine agreements incorporate battery storage, marking Amazon’s first solar-plus-storage hybrid projects in Australia and its first deployment of this model outside the United States.

By pairing solar generation with batteries, these projects are designed to better match supply with demand and support grid stability across the National Electricity Market.
Several projects also highlight evolving land-use models in the renewable sector. The Muswellbrook Solar Farm, for example, is being developed on rehabilitated brownfield land, including former coal mining sites. Other projects incorporate agricultural co-use, allowing livestock grazing alongside solar infrastructure and supporting regional economic activity.
Matt O’Rourke, AWS Head of Infrastructure and Energy Policy for Australia and New Zealand, shares that the agreements represent Amazon’s largest single-year renewable investment in Australia.
“Our total investment in renewable energy projects in Australia is now AU$2.8 billion. We’re proud to be helping accelerate the nation’s transition to a more sustainable energy future,” says O’Rourke.
Amazon has invested approximately $2.8 billion in Australian renewable energy projects since 2020. The latest agreements also support the company’s broader Climate Pledge commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040.
The investment comes alongside Amazon’s previously announced $20 billion plan to expand data centre infrastructure in Australia by 2029, reflecting the increasing energy demands of cloud computing and artificial intelligence. This latest investment complements Amazon’s previously announced AU$20 billion investment alongside Prime Minister, the Hon. Anthony Albanese, to expand data centre infrastructure in Australia by 2029.
Amazon’s investments in carbon-free energy are part of our Climate Pledge goal to reach net-zero carbon across its operations by 2040. Amazon Web Services is also advancing water sustainability initiatives as part of its goal to be water positive by 2030, including treated wastewater solutions for data centre cooling.
