There are currently over 40 wind farms operating around the country, with more than 130 projects either committed or proposed. EcoGeneration presents a snapshot of a few of the most advanced large scale wind farms under development in Australia.
According to the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics’ (ABARE) inventory of over 50 major wind projects in Australia, which lists projects under construction, planned or in development, more than a third of Australia’s large scale wind farms are located in Victoria, just under a third in South Australia, and about one fifth in New South Wales.
Wind projects in Australia are clustered around a number of key areas in these southern states. These include Victoria’s southwest, such as the areas surrounding Ballarat and Portland, and South Australia’s southeast.
In New South Wales, current and developing projects are spread over more diverse locations, from sites near Broken Hill, in the state’s mid-west, to the areas surrounding Goulburn and Canberra closer to the east coast.
Tasmania, Queensland and Western Australia have a handful of projects underway, with more developments anticipated in the future.
See page 54 of the September/October edition of EcoGeneration for a map and project details of some of the most advanced large scale wind farms under development in Australia.
