The Victorian Government’s framework for energy policy planning until 2030, Victoria’s Energy Future, has been released by Victorian Minister for Energy and Resources Peter Batchelor and Department of Primary Industries Secretary Richard Bold.
Victoria’s Energy Future states that Victoria’s energy sector will face a massive transformation as the world shifts to a low carbon emissions future. At present, more than 90 per cent of Victoria’s energy comes from brown coal mined in the La Trobe Valley.
The State Government aims to reduce emissions by increasing the proportion of renewable energy generation, changing energy consumption behaviour, encouraging research and development into new renewable energy technologies and using carbon capture and storage technologies.
Geothermal and gas-generated electricity will also play a greater part in the energy generation mix under the plan.
