The Theni I project consists of eleven 1.5 MW turbines, the first three of which were commissioned in February. The final eight turbines and substation were completed in June and have been connected to the existing grid.

Theni I has been registered under the Generation Based Incentive (GBI) scheme, only the second wind farm project in India to be approved for the scheme. Under the GBI, approved wind power projects selling electricity into the grid are provided with additional tariffs, on a per kilowatt hour basis.

Located in the south western part of Tamil Nadu, the Theni wind farm features Vestas V82 geared wind turbines, each with a capacity of 1.65 MW with a blade diameter of 82 metres.

Global firm SGS acted as contract engineer for the project, ensuring the quality of construction works.

SGS provided dedicated project monitoring, presenting progress reports on a daily, weekly and monthly basis to ensure that quality was maintained without compromise.

Throughout challenging conditions such as frequent rain, inadequate infrastructure to transport the equipment and laborious land clearance works, the project was completed on time and on budget.

Vestas honoured SGS with an award in recognition of its contribution towards the successful completion of the first phase of the project.
