Sydney’s Desalination Plant, which is 100 per cent offset by renewable energy, is now in operation.
The plant will run for a two year proving period which will take into account rainfall, climatic outlook and dam levels.
The Capital Wind Farm in Bungendore, which was opened by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in November 2009, provides the renewable energy requirements for the desalination plant. The farm has a total capacity of 141 MW and features 67 Suzlon S88 2.1 turbines.
The desalination plant will eventually provide enough water to meet up to 15 per cent of Sydney’s water needs.
