Papua New Guinean (PNG) energy company, PNG Energy Developments, has signed a Memorandum of Co-operation with Origin Energy, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh and PNG’s Minister for State Assisting the Prime Minister on Constitutional Matters, the Hon Moses Maladina MP, to support development of the Purari Hydro Resource at Wabo in the Gulf Province of PNG.
Purari Hydro Resource would deliver 1,800 MW of base load electricity directly to Weipa, North Queensland, via an undersea cable, which then would be transmitted onto Townsville.
From Townsville, the electricity could be sent to other locations in North Queensland including Mt Isa and the North West Mineral Province.
Premier Bligh has backed the multi-billion dollar hydro project in PNG suggesting that it would create an unprecedented green energy grid in far north Queensland and feed into Australia's national electricity market.

A feasibility study is expected to be completed in 2012, and the project could be up and running by 2020.
