Matt Daly: “don’t put all your eggs in one basket”

Recently, EcoGeneration interviewed Matt Daly, General Manager of REC Solar on the future of the renewable energy sector at Clean Energy Week, located in Melbourne in May.
Where do you see the renewable energy sector going in the short and long term?
I see us taking a greater market share from traditional energy, especially with the likes of what has happened in Japan with their disaster. We have seen a big shift away from dirty energy producing technologies.
Do you think this is contingent on a carbon price?
Yes and no. I don’t believe in sound business models based on subsidies. The subsidies need to disappear over a period of time. REC actually has a well-diversified product set in the value chain – our core business isn’t necessarily the module; we do the silicon, the cells, the wafer and the module.

What one piece of advice would you give to new entrants to the clean energy industry?
Pick a company that is diversified and going to be around for a long time; don’t put all your eggs in one basket. And test your business model.
