The Age reported that Australia’s leading climate scientists believe the Federal Government is not doing enough to cut green house gas emissions. But they want its climate legislation quickly passed in Parliament anyway.

One scientist said “It is important that legislation be approved now, as any delay sends a signal to business and the community that it is okay to procrastinate.”

The Federal Government has already said it will delay its emissions trading scheme by one year, but will increase the upper limit of its carbon reduction target range to 25 per cent of 2000 emission levels by 2020, subject to global agreement.

The government had planned to introduce the scheme in July 2010 but came up against opposition from business, green groups and the coalition.

Mr Rudd still wants the legislation for the scheme to be passed this year but the scheme itself will not start until 2011 at the earliest.
