Project scope and the site

Powersmart worked directly with the property owner, builder, and architect to design and install a power system for three homes on King Island, Tasmania. A custom built power shed was designed to house all of the equipment. The solar panel framing and wind turbine are designed for King Island’s harsh weather and are rated for cyclone wind conditions.

Technology

Fifteen x 180 watt Evergreen solar modules were integrated into the building frame and roof at a 60 degree tilt. Engineered specifically for Tasmania’s high winds, a 6 kilowatt (kW) wind turbine is located next to the power building in an ideal site for uninterrupted airflow. It can be raised and lowered using a pulley system and tools in the power system building. The 18 kW inverter power system is housed in the building alongside a 25 kW diesel generator and 2200 A/hour battery bank. All wiring is internal and behind the walls.

The system is an elegant use of technology to provide clean, uninterrupted and reliable, power to a high-end home retreat.

Future outlook

“Our clients like it so much they are installing our solar power systems on their old English Castle and holiday retreat in Thailand,” says Powersmart Director Mike Bassett-Smith.
