An interactive tool has been developed by RMIT’s Centre for Design, together with consultants WSP Environmental, to help designers focus on the environmental impacts of a product’s lifecycle across materials, manufacture, use and end of life.
The ‘What is Eco-Design’ tool is accessible on the Design Victoria website, and is part of the Victorian Government’s $14.9 million Design Victoria strategy.
Victorian Environment and Sustainability Minister Gavin Jennings said that the tool will assist in the ongoing pursuit of excellence and innovation in the Victorian design industry.
“With around 80 per cent of a product’s environmental impacts locked in at the design stage, and over 76,000 designers in the state, there is significant potential for better resource efficiency and product innovation when eco-principles are widely incorporated,” said Mr Jennings.
