Energy efficiency declarations for offices put to Senate
Mon, 22 March 2010
Commercial office space owners will have to disclose energy efficiency information to prospective buyers, lessees and sub-lessees, if a Bill which has been put to the Senate Committee is passed.
The Building Energy Efficiency Disclosure Bill requires a full energy efficiency certificate for all office space over 2,000 square meters that is being sold or rented. The certificate includes a star rating of the buildings energy efficiency, an assessment of the efficiency of lighting, and additional guidance on improving the building.
“This will not only lead to more informed purchasers and lessees, it will also help to transition the market to a low carbon future by rewarding current market leaders, and encouraging owners of inefficient buildings to pay more attention to energy efficiency opportunities,” said Greg Combet, Minister Assisting the Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficicency.
The Bill is part of a Council of Australian Governments commitment to make changes to the 2010 Building Code of Australia that would increase the energy efficiency of new buildings.
The Committee is due to report its decision on 11 May.
A previous version of this article stated that the Building Energy Efficiency Disclosure Bill had been passed in the Senate. This has been amended, and the correct information appears above.
