EcoGen 2010 is set to be the clean energy event of the year, bringing together the highest levels of the clean energy industry, locally and internationally. David Rand will be speaking between 1:30–3:00pm on Day Three of EcoGen 2010, 8 September.
David was educated as a natural scientist and electrochemist at the University of Cambridge, from which he received the degrees of BA, MA, PhD, and ScD.
David joined CSIRO in July 1969 to develop enhanced electrocatalysts for direct methanol fuel cells. In 1977, he established the CSIRO Battery Research Group and remained its leader until 2003. Until his retirement from CSIRO in December 2008, David was engaged principally with the development of hydrogen as the key energy vector for a future sustainable society. He continues to serve CSIRO as an Honorary Research Fellow.
David’s research has been recognized both nationally and internationally by the award of the Faraday Medal of the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK, (1991), the UNESCO Gaston Plante´ Medal (1996), the CSIRO Chairman’s Medal (2000), the Australian Centenary Medal (2003), the Stokes Medal of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (2006), and the CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement (2008).
Article continues below…David is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. His work has been published in the form of 150 research papers and three patents. He has also edited 33 volumes on battery and fuel cell topics, and has co-authored the books: Batteries for Electric Vehicles (1997), Understanding Batteries (2001), Clean Energy (2004), and Hydrogen Energy: Challenges and Prospects (2008). David has been the Asia–Pacific Editor of the Journal of Power Sources since 1983, and has served as the Chief Energy Scientist of the World Solar Challenge since 1987.
