The Commission proposal did not include any specific target dates for zero-energy buildings, but indicated that it would like member states to set intermediate national targets for existing buildings.

The amended direction seeks to increase financial support for improving energy efficiency of buildings and upgrade energy performance of existing buildings. Solar panels, heat pumps and smart meters would be used to produce energy and improve energy efficiency.

Meanwhile, Singapore’s Inter-Ministerial Committee on Sustainable Development (IMCSD) has set an 80 per cent target for the proportion of green buildings in its built environment.

To achieve this, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) will roll out its second Green Building Masterplan, a roadmap that identifies specific initiatives to achieve a sustainable built environment in Singapore by 2030.
