Energy and Resources Minister Peter Batchelor has visited Geogen, Victoria’s geothermal exploration site at Mt Buninyong, south of Ballarat.

Working with Monash University geoscientists, Geogen Victoria has developed special-purpose, highly sensitive thermal measuring equipment.

Geogen Victoria was one of five companies granted exploration permits in 2007 by the Brumby Government to look for geothermal energy sources in Victoria.

Mr Batchelor said although the geothermal industry was still in its infancy in Victoria, it had significant potential.

Geothermal exploration permits have been granted by the state government to seven companies that are exploring an area spanning more than 70 per cent of Victoria.
