IRENA provides an unparalleled opportunity for Australia to work co-operatively with more than 100 countries to further the development and deployment of renewable energy technologies,” said the Minister for Resources and Energy Martin Ferguson, who represented Australia at the meeting of foundation members in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

Australia’s participation in IRENA is a natural extension of our strong domestic action to promote and deploy renewable energy, which includes the introduction of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, a Renewable Energy Target of 20 per cent by 2020, and the $4.5 billion Clean Energy Initiative,” said Mr Ferguson.

Meanwhile, Environment Minister Peter Garrett met with the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Nobuo Tanaka in Paris to discuss Australia’s energy efficiency agenda. Mr Garrett said that he planned to use IEA research, data collection and analysis on appliances, energy use and supply to help inform the implementation of the Government’s agenda.
