New information released by Desertec about the Pan-Asian energy network details the proposed use of subsea gas pipelines fitted with high voltage direct current power lines so that gas and electricity could be exported simultaneously.

The initial destination of Australian-harvested gas and solar energy would be East Timor.

Subsequently the energy products would be sent via a series of subsea, subterranean and above ground networks onto other regional nations, including China.

“Australia could provide China and the economies of Northeast Asia as much as 10,000 terawatt hours of electricity a year”, said a DESERTEC spokesperson.

The Desertec organisation intends to serve as a hub for realising the potential of a sustainable supply of electricity across the globe.
