What has been one of MWM’s most successful cogeneration projects?
530 Collins Street, Melbourne, is one of the best examples of how cogeneration and energy efficiency can deliver spectacular outcomes. This building has recently been recognised in the 2011 Property Council awards in the category ‘Sustainable Redevelopment of an Existing Building’. The use of cogeneration and energy efficiency has raised the National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) rating of the building to 5 stars.
What are some projects that MWM has recently worked on?
MWM has supplied the gas genset and engineering support for the following projects:
- Workplace 6, Darling Walk, Charlestown Square, New South Wales
- Tooheys Brewery, 39 Hunter Street, Sydney, New South Wales
- University of New South Wales Tyree Building, Sydney, New South Wales
- Adelaide University, Adelaide, South Australia
- Midfield Meats, Warnambool, Victoria
- Auckland Hospital, Auckland, New Zealand.
All of these projects had their own challenges and required project-specific engineering solutions to achieve the desired outcome for the end customer.
What is your outlook for the cogeneration market in Australia?
In recent years we have seen Sydney City Council announce that it is planning for 330 megawatt (MW) of cogeneration, and the City of Melbourne is planning for 420 MW. We at MWM are working with our customers on over 200 MW of cogeneration projects in different stages of development, in addition to the Sydney and Melbourne council plans. There are reports from the CSIRO forecasting the installation of 3000 MW Australia-wide by 2030. All of this shows that cogeneration will have a large part to play in a low carbon energy mix in Australia.
